The Privy

This has caused the most consternation and generated the most questions of anything else we are doing out here!
So the privy has been promoted to its very own page!

"Nearly a third of all household drinking water in the US is used to flush toilets"
--
Joseph Jenkins, "The Humanure Handbook"

"The function of all organic matter, animal and vegetable, is to maintain the fertility of the soil"
--
J.C. Wylie, "The Wastes of Civilization"

Privy version 1.0 ~ Our composting toilet -
do your thing then cover with peat moss

For more on composting toilets and why we are doing this -

Our method is based on Joseph Jenkins' "Humanure Handbook"

Privy version 2.0

We acquired a Port-a-John shell and made our privy wind and rain-proof just in time for this wet, wet winter.

The blue bucket holds the peat moss, above the privy is a magazine rack, and spare roll

This shows the privy from the back ... on sunny days we sit with the door open. Nice view, huh?

Privy spot in relation to everything else

The compost heap ... pile on the right is capped and will be ready in Spring 2006
