Some critters we have encountered ....
Hummingbirds! |
A scorpion we disturbed ...
if you must go moving rocks in Arizona! We do have to be careful of these ... they are bark scorpions |
This guy came moseying into
our campsite ... Click for info about Tarantulas ... they are harmless and DON'T JUMP! |
We identified this one as a Gopher Snake (non-venomous) | ||
We are pretty sure this was a Mojave Green Rattlesnake ~ he/she was olive green, about 2 feet in length, and unmistakeably a rattler. (VERY venomous!) Sure glad they come with early warning devices! |
This beautiful beetle's common name is the Glorious Beetle ... truly apt. A member of the scarab family, it looks like a piece of costume jewelry! |
A Tarantula Hawk with the poor tarantula it killed ... BIC lighter there for size indication. The Tarantula Hawk is a particularly beautiful wasp ... iridescent black and brown ... shines blue in some lights. Apparently it has a VERY painful sting (on a scale of 1-4 with a bee sting being a 2 -- this rates a 4!) ... so when I ran away as it chased me (it was NOT happy with us being close ... thought we were after its spider) this was not cowardice, but prudence!!! |
